“Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded.” Proverbs 13:13

My thoughts this morning centered around the fact that whenever God gives us instruction there is always some kind of reward in following that instruction. At times we do not see the immediate reward, we only see the sacrifice. Howevebibler, it is important to obey anyway, and trust that God has a reason for what He is doing. When we despise His Word to us, as the verse above says, we bring destruction upon ourselves. Whether that Word is tithing, or giving to missions, or fasting, or simply doing the work that is before us, His Word has to be more important than what our “flesh” wants. I may want pizza, but if God has said fast bread, I know His purpose is much more important than my momentary desire for pizza. If I consider leading a Bible Study and the Lord tells me no, I understand that He is not trying to keep me from walking in His plan and anointing. No, He has something else that is more important for me to be focused on.

He can see the future. We can’t.

He loves us so much He sacrificed His Son for us to be reconnected to that love. His intentions for us our pure. Our intentions are often muddied with selfishness.

He knows what we need for our hearts to grow. We don’t always know what we need.

So, today, I was thinking about the reward of revering His commandment as Proverbs 13:13 talks about. Here are some of the rewards I am already receiving from this fast He has asked me to do:

  • I have lost ten pounds of needless weight that has been hanging on since Asher was born.
  • I feel more clear minded and my energy is more stable.
  • I am able to keep my internal peace much longer than before.
  • My self-control is increasing in stressful situations.
  • I have spent more time in prayer which means less time in worry.
  • I am seeing breakthrough over certain things in our congregation.
  • I am more grateful and less offended.
  • My desire for the things of the Lord has grown.

So, today, where are you living in the reward of obedience? Is there destruction in your life that could be avoided by heeding and honoring the Word of God in your life? A fool despises correction, and according to the Proverb above, despising the Word of God invites destruction into our lives. I don’t know about you, but I want to go after the reward and not end up in destruction. It is time to embrace a lifestyle of obedience and reverence in every area of life, and not hold anything back. If He tells us no, then it’s because it is for our own good, to keep us from Destruction.

“Thank you, Heavenly Father, that you know what is best, and Your desire is to richly reward us as your obedient sons and daughters. Amen.”
